The Restrainer: Part 3

In regards to Michael the Archangel being the restrainer of the Wicked one of II Thessalonians chapter 2, we might ask:

What Does John Say?

In Rev. 12:7-9, John tells us that,

“there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.”

He continues in verse 12 through 14,

"Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time…he persecuted the woman [Israel] which brought forth the man child…she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.”

That's THREE AND A HALF years (one time + two times + 1/2 a time)! That is the second half of Daniel's 70th Week, and it is a period of time known as the Great Tribulation (Matthew 24:21). It is the Time of Jacob's Trouble.

Satan has been cast out of heaven and LET LOOSE on earth. He is no longer restrained!

The time of Michael's standing up marks the beginning of the time of trouble according to Daniel 12:1. And, here in Revelation, we see that Michael’s standing up occurs at the same time as the “war in heaven,” which marks the mid-point of the 70th week. (seven ÷ two = 3 1/2)

His standing up starts the 3 ½ years of the devil’s wrath on earth against the saints (Rev. 12:11) and Israel (Rev. 12: 13).

Back to 2nd Thessalonians

When we examine Paul’s words in II Thessalonians chapter 2, we see that he too was referring to this exact time.

Paul says that when the one who is restraining is taken out of the way, the Antichrist will be revealed. This occurs when, as God, “he [the Antichrist] sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.” (v. 4)

Or, as the Lord Jesus said, “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place,…” (Matt. 24:15)

This is how the Antichrist will be revealed once the restrainer moves out of the way.

The Lord Jesus says that we are not to wait for the Antichrist to sit down in the Temple, but to flee if we see him even standing in the holy place. Because, once he is seen standing in the holy place, just as assuredly, he will sit in the Temple...and then he will begin to persecute the saints of God!

Once Michael casts the devil to the earth, he then steps back (or stands up) and allows the devil to have his way with Israel.

The time of trouble begins when the restraint is removed from the ‘mystery of iniquity’ allowing the Beast to emerge unrestrained on the scene.

Since the Lord Jesus quotes Daniel twice in the Olivet Discourse, thereby connecting the Antichrist with the final king in Daniel’s vision (cf. Daniel 11:31, Matt. 24:15), and since Paul’s remarks about the man of sin sitting in the temple parallel Jesus’ mention of the “abomination of desolation,” it is very likely that Paul had Michael in mind when he spoke of the restrainer.

(Yeah, you might want to read that paragraph again, too!)

Fitting The Five Criteria

Michael and his army” fit all the criteria necessary to be the restrainer:

1. The angelic army is neuter, and Michael their commander is singular masculine.

2. They have been around for more than 2,000 years, so they meet the time requirement.

3. They are spiritual beings.

4. Michael is clearly seen in scripture to be the counter force to Satan (Jude 9, Rev. 12).

5. Michael and his angels are more powerful that Satan and his angels (Rev. 12:8).

In Summary

While we may not be able to say with certainty that Michael and his army is the restrainer of II Thessalonians chapter 2, he/it is the best fit by far. And, incredibly, we have biblical support for Michael being engaged in just this type of restraining activity in Daniel 10.

There is NO such scriptural support for the Holy Spirit being the restrainer.

Furthermore, if Michael is the restrainer, then the whole pre-Tribulation argument from II Thessalonians 2 collapses. There is no Scriptural warrant for the teaching that the Holy Spirit will be removed from the earth. And, there is also no Scriptural warrant for the assumption that the Church is removed with the Holy Spirit before the revealing of the Antichrist.

As a matter of fact, if Paul did indeed have the removal of the Church in mind in verse 7, then he would be directly contradicting what he had just written in verses 1-3. Because there he said that “our gathering together unto him” will not occur until AFTER the apostasy and the revealing of the man of sin.

It just makes better sense, and better Scriptural exposition:

The Rapture is AT the Revelation.

The Restrainer: Part 2

In our last post, we began a study on 'the restrainer' of the Antichrist in II Thessalonians chapter 2. We saw that none of the normally accepted entities really fits the bill.

Which leads us to a question:

What About Michael?

During the reign of Cyrus, King of Persia, an angel appeared to Daniel to reveal the future to him. He informed Daniel that he had been delayed twenty-one days because of a struggle with the “prince of the kingdom of Persia,” (Dan. 10:10-13). Then he said that he must “return to fight with the prince of Persia.” And when he was gone forth, the “prince of Grecia” will come. (v. 20)

Was this unnamed angel struggling with the human ruler of Persia? (Persia was the supreme world power at the time of Daniel’s vision.) It's doubtful. How could a human restrain an angel for twenty-one days? Besides, the same angel in Dan. 11:1 said he stood to “confirm and to strengthen” Darius, the first Medo-Persian King, from the very first year of the Persian Empire.

This angel was helping the human ruler of Persia while at the same time he was also fighting against the “prince of the kingdom of Persia.” It is fair to conclude that the prince of Persia was a demonic spirit that sought to turn the kingdom of Persia to evil; and this angel was assigned to restrain it.

Earlier in verse 14, this same angel said to Daniel, “I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days…

And, verse 21 reads,

“…and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.”

The word “holdeth” is Strongs # 2388 chazaq. Chazaq is a “primitive root meaning to ‘fasten’ upon; hence, to seize, be strong…, obstinate; to bind, restrain, conquer:…”

Michael the Archangel

Michael appears to be superior to the angel speaking to Daniel (in strength, and possibly in rank) since he “came to help” (v. 13) him fight the prince of Persia.

This passage teaches us that there are demonic spirits seeking to control governments for evil purposes, and that there are angels assigned to fight against them.

In the major outline of the succession of kingdoms leading to the Antichrist, we can conclude that this restraining activity was ongoing over each of these successive kingdoms.

And Michael is definitely identified as the chief restrainer in this passage:

1. He is one of the ‘holding’ angels.

2. He is called "Michael the archangel" in Jude 1:9

3. He is a leader of fighting angels according to Revelation 12:7

4. Not to mention, he is Israel's "prince" (the angel assigned to the nation of Israel, where the Antichrist will make his appearance)

When Michael Stands Up

Daniel 12: 1 reads,

“And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.”

It is within the context of the angelic restraint of these successive demonic powers, which seek to control the series of the world's empires leading to the Antichrist, that we find that Michael will ‘stand up’ and the time of trouble will begin.

(You might want to read that last paragraph again.)

It is Michael and his armies that have been ‘holding’ at bay the demonic spirits which attempt to control the world empires.

Standing For and Standing Up

1. Michael “standeth for” the children of Israel. That is, he is their chief defender.

2. When Michael ‘stands up,’ the trouble begins.

What does it mean ‘to stand up?’ As in a spiritual wrestling match, Michael has apparently been holding down his demonic opponent. When Michael stands up, he releases his opponent to do what he will.

And hence the time of trouble for Israel begins!

Stay tuned for more on Michael.
